Congregational Care
"A
new commandment I give you. You must love one another,
just as I have loved you. If you love one another, everyone
will know you are my disciples.."
-John 13:34-35
The
Origin of Congregational Care
As
believers in a risen Savior, we are compelled to demonstrate
to one another the love that God has shown us through Jesus
Christ within the community of faith. We are called
to be a caring community. Congregational Care is not limited
to an individual or a group within the church. Everyone is
charged with the responsibility of caring and demonstrating
concern for each other. That demonstration of love and concern
is the very reflection of Christ and his love for us. In essence,
Congregational Care is the ministry of ministry. Ministering
to the emotional and spiritual needs of others is the foundation
of Congregational Care.
With
our congregation growing, Pastor Marcus added Congregational
Care as one of the primary focus areas within the purpose
driven model at Turner Chapel. To that end, he added a Minister
of Congregational Care position to the Turner Chapel clergy.
Rev. Valerie Sanders has effectively served in that position
and the head of the Congregational Care purpose since its
inception.
Turner Chapel has also opened
a Care and Counseling Center in association with the Care
and Counseling Centers of Georgia.
The Importance of Congregational
Care
Although feelings are often
negated or dismissed, it is a critical component of your overall
well-being. When Christ speaks of making you whole - that
includes your emotional as well as your spiritual and physical
state. Congregational Care is an important aspect of Christian
obligations - not just caring for others, but allowing yourself
to be cared for during your time of need. When you need encouragement,
support, or a listening ear, the Congregational Care ministry
is here to help.
